Bay City Style

Summertime fin for the family

Just 20 minutes away from the gulf coast and only 1 hour from Houston, you’re guaranteed to never be bored because of the many activities in and around Bay City. This city offers outdoor enthusiasts a paradise filled with hunting, fishing, bird watching and swimming available year-round. The historical downtown, with its’ early Texas historic facades and courthouse square is filled with plenty of shops and restaurants featuring just about everything.

When you step out to dine be sure to bring your appetite because, in true Texas style, most restaurants serve generous portions.   Whether it’s seafood, BBQ, steak or Mexican cuisine you’re craving you are sure to find it in town.  Sample some uniquely southern dishes such as grits, okra or buttermilk pie or step out for fried catfish or gumbo.  With around forty eateries in Bay City and more opening up all the time you’ll discover something you love, guaranteed.

If you enjoy getting out and about Bay City has plenty of opportunities around the square. Every second Thursday of the month, Rock the Block, gives everyone an opportunity to explore what the merchants have planned as a surprise! It could be just about anything!  Downtown merchants and restaurants are open late for your enjoyment and there are food trucks and live entertainment from 5-7 pm, except in the summer when they stay open until 8 pm. The theme for May is 60’s and Woodstock type clothing so come dressed in your favorite hippie attire! Music, shopping, food and fun is what Bay City does best, so plan on being there and take the dancing to the streets!

Market Days on the Square will be happening every 3rd Saturday throughout the summer. Vendors bring their arts, crafts and other distinctive products to sell, and anything else you could think of. You’re bound to find that just-gotta-have item you can’t live without. Market Day on the Square is from 9am-4pm so get there early!

Also, be sure and stop by the Matagorda County Nature Birding Center in Bay City. This 34-acre park on the Colorado River is half botanical garden and half wilderness preserve. It has great hiking trails and will lead you through beautiful  oak forests, wetlands and prairies. The friendly folks at the Visitor Center will provide you with a map and you can start exploring. Discover the rare beauty and abundant nature which co-exist along the Colorado River and there’s even a spot for launching your kayak. Enjoy the park and grab a golf cart for a $5.00 fee. Take a picnic and make a day of it.

Another fun thing to do is a trip to the Matagorda County Historical and Children's Museum. This great museum offers up interesting artifacts for all ages. The most significant archeological find of the century makes up part of the museum’s exhibits! The extraordinary excavation that uncovered the Belle shipwreck in 1995 from its’ watery grave in Matagorda Bay, is on display in a diorama, as well as artifacts from the ship, including a bronze cannon and navigational instruments.

Discover the mystery and art of LaSalle at the Matagorda County Historical Museum and be sure and bring the kids because the museum has an interactive Children’s Museum created just for them!

Downstairs is an elaborate children's museum set up like an old-time village, complete with a country school, barbershop and an old mercantile store. Children can take a Walking Tour of "Our Town" and pretend they are in yesteryear. Finally a museum where kids are encouraged to touch everything! This children's museum has something for every child's imagination; pioneer clothes to play dress up, pioneer house, shop at the general store with a real old fashioned squeaky wood floor, pretend they’re cops and robbers with their own bank, stagecoach and jail, even a classroom and old barbershop!  Each replica is made for a child's size and depicts a historic piece of Bay City, so your kids can learn without them knowing they are being taught! Children will have a blast!

If you’re headed to the beach it’s only a 20 minute drive away! In fact there are several beaches located a short distance from Bay City. If you want to continue exploring the history and mystery of LaSalle, take a drive over to Palacios and drop in on the City by the Sea Museum. This is where archeologists would sift through and catalog artifacts brought up directly from the ship. Palacios is a great place to visit and it offers a pristine beach on Matagorda Bay.  If you’re headed to the Gulf of Mexico the Town of Matagorda is the place to be. Where the Colorado River flows into the gulf a beautiful unspoiled beach awaits you, and if you’re there to try your hand at offshore fishing, you’ll be out the blue water in no time. It really doesn’t get any better than that.

Bay City and Matagorda County welcomes you to discover and enjoy the diversity this little piece of Heaven has to offer. A whole new world is waiting for you. Relax and enjoy!
