What would you like to do for a summer vacation? If you’re lucky to live in Texas you have a lot of options and where most families migrate each year is their favorite beach. Why? Because who doesn’t want to be near water when the temperatures start climbing. Sea breezes, water sports, like boating and fishing or just hanging out on or near the beach and enjoying all the wonderful local seafood caught fresh that same day. There’s quite a few really cool places to visit but the one that seems to stand out as the unessential coastal community is the Town of Matagorda.
You can stay in a motel or lodge, a historic bed and breakfast, rent an RV space or pitch a tent on the beach. Almost fifty-five miles in Matagorda County is the Gulf of Mexico's shoreline and which features a beautiful beach park with pier, covered picnic tables, a large parking lot and more. Twenty miles of beach is accessible by car (4-wheel drive recommended) and the remaining thirty-five miles by boat. The beach is a paradise isolated from much of the public and is a beachcomber's dream.
Matagorda is also full of history. Back in the day this tiny coastal town was the third largest port in the territory. The oldest house/building in Matagorda County was built in 1832, has been fully restored and now operates as the Stanley-Fisher House Bed & Breakfast. Matagorda Cemetery is a Historic Texas Cemetery and is one of the earliest cemeteries in Texas. Those buried there include soldiers of the Texas Revolution, War of 1812 and the Civil War, along with victims of Karankawa Indian attacks. The first Episcopal Church in Texas was built in 1838 and continues to conduct services today. Historical markers and buildings can be found throughout the Town of Matagorda along with upscale eateries, plenty of shopping, hotels, motels and more.
Not to mention this coastal paradise is home to some of the finest fishing and fishing tournaments in the State of Texas, some of which will be taking place this summer. June 10-11, marks the 11th Annual Texas Trio Classic.
The Texas Trio Classic has two simple goals: “Fish for a Cure” and to host the best inshore fishing tournament in the state.
Over the past several years this tournament has donated to many charities and various non-profit organizations to benefit the residents in Matagorda County and The Texas Trio Classic has grown into one of the largest bay fishing tournaments on the Texas Gulf Coast. The tournament was started in 2007 with 19 teams and last year’s 8th annual event brought 98 teams and raised over $55,000 for charities. 2016 is already looking good and it doesn’t look like they plan on slowing down anytime soon.
Donny Tran, owner of Tran Sport Boats, is offering an exclusive this year for owners of Tran Sport Boats. $2500 extra goes to the highest placing Tran Sport boat in the top five of each division of the Texas Trio Classic. How’s that for incentive? It all takes place starting Fri June 10th, 2016 at the Matagorda Harbor Tournament Pavilion with Team Calcutta. Over $30,000 was brought in at the Calcutta last year! Dinner and live entertainment will be served up as well as a Team Calcutta Auction. If you have never experienced a Calcutta, come and join the fun Friday night before the start of the tournament. The Calcutta allows everyone to be a part of the Texas Trio Classic! Bid on a team and be a part of the tournament that people keep talking about!
