Spring is here, summer is coming up fast and the Town of Blessing is pulling out all the stops with good old fashioned music, food and fun…and we all know how great the food is at the Hotel Blessing.
On Saturday May 1st fun times get started with the 63rd Annual Blessing Day. Over 50 years ago this event began as a day of homecoming. It was a day for the people who grew up here and had moved away, to return and visit with friends and relatives. This is still happening today. Many old friends come back to visit with others and what follows has turned into quite a celebration. Heck, you know the folks in Blessing know how to throw a shindig because they’ve been doing it right for over 60 years!
A parade down Main Street gets this day kicked off and there will be craft booths, games, rides, a raffle, food and drinks for sale throughout the day. A barbecue plate will be served from 11am to 2pm and you can dine-in at the air-conditioned Blessing Community Center Building, eat outside at a picnic table placed under the beautiful trees or pavilion, or take a plate to go. All proceeds raised go to scholarships for the Tidehaven High School Seniors.
So come and enjoy the food, fun, and fellowship at Blessing Day on May 1st at the Blessing Community Center located in downtown Blessing on Farm Road 616. For booth information please contact Aven Rhoades at 361-588-7424 or 367-588-6500, Wed thru Sun from 10 - 4.
Blessing will also be celebrating on Saturday, July 9th with the annual “FUN(D) RAISER” for the historic Hotel Blessing. History and fun do go hand-in-hand and this is something locals and visitors to Blessing definitely know a thing or two about. This year’s event will feature live entertainment with a band, a raffle drawing, 50/50 drawing, live and silent auctions, along with a historic marker run with a percentage of the proceeds going to the hotel fund. Sack lunches will be sold and there will be activities for the children. It’s only once a year so make plans to be in Blessing on July 9th.
Proceeds from the fundraiser are for the sole purpose of keeping the historic Hotel Blessing functioning efficiently and to keep everything running in good working order.
Located in northwestern Matagorda County, Blessing was officially established with a U.S. Post Office in 1902. Prominent developers J.E. Pierce and his son, Abel B. Pierce, began construction of a hotel in 1906. The design of the hotel was inspired by the Spanish mission-style churches and was translated into an “Anglo” wood-siding construction. The hotel was built for land seekers, as well as a home for the Pierce Family.
In 1977 the Hotel Blessing was donated to the Blessing Historical Foundation and restoration began in 1978. In 1979, Hotel Blessing was entered into the National Register of Historic Places, the first official listing for Matagorda County with this distinction.
Hotel Blessing is open for business and is a great place to get-away-from-it-all. Located in the hotel is the Hotel Blessing Coffee Shop, featuring some of the best food in the State of Texas. Rumor has it they still use old wood stoves and you never know - they could be the same ones used to cook dinner when Stephen F. Austin came through there in 1828!
This good old fashioned party takes place on July 9th at the Hotel Blessing, so don’t miss out! For more information call (361) 588-9579 or visit them on Facebook.
